Almond Squares
2013-02-25
This tart contains extraordinary amounts of butter and a crunchy top. It’s great on it’s own or even better when accompanied by some vanilla ice cream. The recipe is from Cozinha Tradicional Portuguesa.
Ingredients (6 squares)
For the dough:
- 200g flour (or 1+2/3 cups)
- 100g butter (or a little less than 1/2 cup)
- 200g sugar (or 1 cup)
- 2 eggs
For the filling:
- 100g sugar (or 1/2 cup)
- 100g butter (or a little less than 1/2 cup)
- 125g pealed and slivered almonds (or 4.4oz)
- 0,5dl milk (or a little less than 1/4 cup)
Instructions (Time: 1 hour)
For the dough:
Sift the flour to your counter top. Add the sugar and make a well in the middle. Add the eggs and the butter cut into small pieces. Work the dough for a bit until all the ingredients are mixed.
Place the dough in a tart tin and bake in the oven at 200ºC (390ºF) until it turns golden (~15 minutes).
Let it cool down a bit while you make the filling.
For the filling:
Mix the almonds with the sugar, the butter and the milk in a pan. Bring to a boil and keep stirring until it thickens. Spread on top of the base and place in the oven at 220ºC (430ºF) until it turns golden.
Let it cool down before removing from the tin. Serve as a tart or cut it into squares and serve with some vanilla ice cream.
